REDBOOK August … Baby Food … in a cocktail?

REDBOOK August 2011, "Slightly Sloshed Slushie" (AKA "Picky Eater Pear Martini")

This month’s REDBOOK cocktail, “The Slightly Sloshed Slushie” (originally called the “Picky Eater Pear Martini”) includes baby food, believe it or not.  “Baby food, seriously?”, you might ask?  YES!  Just a few years ago, the only baby food you could buy was that over-processed, preservative-laden stuff that sits in the grocery store aisle for years.  But, nowadays, you can buy some really great fresh organic purees that are marketed as baby food.  Whole Foods sells them (they even have a special refrigerated section just for fresh baby food.)  Some of my favorite brands include: Evie’s Organic Edibles, Plum Organics , Yummy Spoonfuls and Sprout Baby Food. (Sprout was created by Food Network chef, Tyler Florence.  The “Roasted Pears” are really great.)

While nothing beats making your own fresh fruit purees, certain fruits are not always in season and pears is one of them. And, we don’t always have the time to make them.  Organic baby food is a great alternative.

This drink was inspired by my picky eater, Maddy, who often leaves the majority of her food on the plate.  I hate wasting it, so I found a good way to utilize some of her leftovers.

“Picky Eater Pear Martini”

1.5 oz pear vodka (i.e. Absolut Pears)

1.5 oz pear baby food (you can also use apricot, peach or apple)

0.5 oz lemon juice

1.5 oz 7-Up

Directions: Combine all the ingredients in a blender cup.  Add 2 cubes of ice.  Blend for 20 seconds, then pour into a cocktail glass.  Enjoy!
